Yet, despite using hoses specifically rated for vacuum service, operators still experience collapsed hoses, reduced productivity, costly downtime, and, in some cases, serious safety hazards.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When a hose suddenly flattens during operation, the first assumption is often that <strong>&#8220;the vacuum was too strong.&#8221;</strong> In reality, that&#8217;s rarely the whole story.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most hose collapses are not caused by a single event. Instead, they occur when multiple factors—such as excessive bending, elevated temperatures, physical damage, aging, improper hose selection, or mechanical abuse—gradually reduce a hose&#8217;s ability to withstand external pressure. By the time a hose visibly collapses, the conditions leading to failure have often been developing long before the job began. Parker&#8217;s <em>Industrial Hose Safety Guide</em> emphasizes that hose performance depends on proper application, routing, environmental conditions, inspection, and maintenance—not simply pressure or vacuum rating alone.¹</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The good news is that hose collapse is often predictable.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unlike sudden failures caused by accidental damage or unexpected pressure spikes, collapse typically leaves warning signs. Understanding how vacuum works, how hose construction resists collapse, and what operating conditions accelerate failure allows operators to identify potential problems before they result in downtime.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When people think about vacuum systems, they often imagine the vacuum &#8220;pulling&#8221; a hose inward until it collapses. While that seems logical, it&#8217;s not actually what happens.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vacuum is simply pressure below atmospheric pressure. A vacuum pump removes air from inside the hose, reducing the internal pressure. The atmosphere surrounding the hose, however, remains at approximately <strong>14.7 psi (101.3 kPa)</strong> at sea level. The greater the difference between the pressure inside the hose and the surrounding atmospheric pressure, the greater the compressive force acting on the hose wall.²</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In other words:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Problems begin when that structural integrity is compromised.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Excessive heat can soften hose materials. Sharp bends can reduce the hose&#8217;s ability to support itself. Abrasion gradually removes protective material. Mechanical abuse can permanently deform reinforcement components. Even natural aging slowly changes material properties.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The company has been on the rise since John McCullough took over as its executive vice president of sales in 2022, Cline said, with no signs of stopping. The company is moving forward with a renewed business focus following advisory meetings with a market researcher, according to McCullough.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Less than an hour outside of downtown Chicago in Vernon Hills, the 75-employee firm has spent the past three years attempting to thread the needle between two seemingly conflicting efforts: carving out a consistent niche in a competitive market, and completely reinventing the company and its image. But McCullough feels that the company is making strides on both accounts.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;It is a huge change,&#8221; McCullough said. &#8220;In the past, Kanaflex always had good quality products, but it was looked at as somewhat stagnant. Now, under new ownership, we&#8217;ve certainly updated and identified the gaps in the business and aligned it with either technology or key people, and we have looked for experts in those fields to be able to fill out and address that gap.&#8221;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A company at rest is either going to stay at rest or worse, die off completely, Cline said. But in order to reshape the company without rocking the proverbial boat too much, the Kanaflex team wanted a solid plan in place for its new direction.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Going along with Kanaflex&#8217;s new direction, McCullough and the firm&#8217;s other top brass wanted to keep the company from getting stale. Enter the FlexDUCT-brand and its new polyurethane hose, one of the company&#8217;s latest products to hit the market.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;We have a product development process where we work with our existing distributors, we work with end users, we work with OEMs,&#8221; McCullough said. &#8220;And just from the daily business process, there (are) requests that are curated and they go into the product development funnel. We evaluate those opportunities and look at the need, and the scale of that need.&#8221;</p>

It fits into industries we&#8217;re currently servicing right now.&#8221;</p>

That&#8217;s something that because the dimensional standards and tolerances are fairly tight, the raw material being virgin allows us to really deliver a quality product.&#8221;</p>
